Lexus Key Replacement - Replacing a Remote Or Fob

It is easy to replace it with a paperclip. Simply take out the old battery, replace it with the new battery (refer to the owner's manual for the type of battery that you need) Then, clip it back into the appropriate spot.
Keys
Lexus keys aren't simple to replace and require a professional locksmith for replacing car keys to make a working spare. This is because each Lexus key has a microchip that needs to be programmed to sync with the immobiliser of your vehicle in case it does not. If it doesn't, the vehicle will not start.

You can save money by doing this yourself, but it will require only a small Phillips screwdriver and the coin (a 20p piece works best) and a paperclip. You will find one or two screws on the back of the fob for the key. Remove them and store them securely (they are small and easy to lose). The fob can be removed to reveal an indentation of circular shape for the key made of metal. Take the battery out (using the paperclip) and insert the new one ensuring it's facing the right way up. Clip the the key back together.
Remotes
Lexus remotes and fobs can be difficult to replace and require locksmiths who are both well-versed and have the proper tools. Some models require the transponder in the key to be changed to work with the immobiliser system of the car. The Lexus models employ different methods to program these chips. This is accomplished using a special device that transmits a specific code to the chip to unlock the doors or start the engine.
Certain Lexus automobiles are built with a single piece of hardware that includes the key head and the remote. They are simpler to replace as there is no separate chip. This kind of key is also a bit less expensive.

Transponder Chips

Nearly all new cars built since 1995 have transponder chips within the key head to disarm the immobiliser system. The head of a key which includes a transponder chips can be removed to reveal an L-shaped key. A transponder chip replacement key or fob is a multi-stage procedure. It involves cutting the keys accurately and programming the chip to connect with the vehicle immobiliser.
A transponder is an electronic chip equipped with Non-Volatile memory (NVM) that has a set of windings (very fine wire twisted around the tube) which look similar to ones found in an electric motor. These windings produce a coded message that the car can read. If the code is correct, then the car will allow you to start it.
There are two kinds of transponder chips, one known as the 80 bit, and the other referred to as a circle + (General Motors). The first type is reusable, but must be unlocked using a special machine to function in a different vehicle that is compatible. The second is more difficult to use as the old ones can be broken, drilled or removed when key cases are changed. They can be salvaged, however and used with the service key, which doesn't require a battery in order to function.
Immobiliser Systems
Immobiliser systems are electronic security devices which prevent thieves from starting up your vehicle. It works by sending a signal from your vehicle to your key when you attempt to start it. The electronic chip in the key responds by transmitting a unique code that must match that of the vehicle in order for it to start. If the codes aren't compatible, the engine will stop immediately and prevent theft of your car.
Modern smart keys and fobs come with an embedded transponder that can store electronic security information in a format which is not easily copied.
